UK sends Royal Navy patrol ships to monitor Jersey blockade. Two Royal Navy patrol vessels are set to monitor a scheduled blockade of Jersey’s main port in an ongoing fishing rights row between the UK and France, catalysed by a new licensing system for French fishing vessels. The move to send the patrol ships followed a decision by France to cut off Jersey’s electricity over a dispute in the wake of Brexit.

Romania investigates case of bear killed by Austrian prince. A possible poaching case involving an Austrian prince, Emanuel von und zu Liechtenstein, who is said to have «wrongly» killed a massive male bear in a trophy hunt is now going to be investigated by the Romanian authorities. The incident occurred in the Carpathian Mountains in March, but an investigation was only launched into the case on April 29th.

Head of Ethiopia’s Tigray region administration resigns. Mulu Nega who was the head of the federal government-appointed interim administration in November, has resigned as fighting between the federal government of Ethiopia and forces in the northern region continue. Thousands of people are believed to have died in the conflict with more than a million people displaced.

Voters will have a chance to make choices on local councils, devolved governments, police commissioners and mayors, in what is being referred to as the most extensive range of local elections the UK has seen since 1973.

ICC to sentence former Ugandan child soldier turned rebel commander. The International Criminal Court is expecting to deliver a verdict today on the case of Dominic Ongwen, a Ugandan child soldier who became a commander for the very rebel group which abducted him. Ongwen could receive a life sentence for war crimes and his case is the first at the ICC to involve an alleged perpetrator and victim of the same war crimes.

Congo to impose military rule in troubled eastern provinces. Civilian authorities will be replaced by military administrations in two conflict-hit provinces of Congo starting today, aimed at, according to the government addressing the worsening bloodshed. Police and military governors who have powers to conduct day and night searches, ban publications, and the movement of people will be installed.

A stock photo company for Africans, by Africans. Finding images showing Africans in everyday situations to illustrate reports or websites is a challenge for African content creators. While several stock photo websites exist, photos of Africans continue to be grossly underrepresented on this platform. Two young creators from the West African country of Benin want to solve this with Iwari, a stock photo platform that provides authentic and high-quality African images.

Kenyan insurtech startup, Lami, raises $1.8m in seed funding. With an intention to provide custom made and affordable insurance products to the average African consumer, Lami, a startup in Kenya merging tech and insurance has raised $1.8m in funding. Accion Venture Lab led the round alongside other angel investors including AAIC, Acuity Ventures, Future Africa, Consonance, and P1 Ventures. Africa has a low insurance coverage due to the expensive and broad insurance packages, the gap Lami wants to fill.

A three year old child is Africa’s oldest known burial. A three year old child buried in East Africa around 78,000 years ago has been revealed by a new study to be the oldest known evidence of modern humans in Africa burying their dead. The study was done by a team of local archaelogists from Kenya where the remains were discovered, then analysed by the National Museums of Kenya, and sent to the National Center for Research on Human Evolution in Burgos, Spain for further analysis.

Nigeria partners with Microsoft on ‘digital transformation’. The government of Nigeria has announced a partnership with Microsoft they say would propel the nation’s efforts to becoming a digital economy while creating 27,000 jobs. Microsoft will deploy its Airband Initiative which has been used to bring high-speed internet connectivity to underserved communities through harnessing the broadcast frequencies of television white spaces.

Halima Cisse had originally been predicted by doctors to give birth to septuplets but she has given birth to nine instead. 25-year-old Cisse joins a small pantheon of mothers of nonuplets which are extremely rare and has predictably become a sensation to Malians.
